Descriptive Writing

                                                                     My Cousin, Johnny

His height is normal for his age and he is 14-15. His nose is thin with a round point like mine. His ears are not too big, not too small, just right. His eyes are emeralds. His body is long and tan and his legs are just right for him.  His face has a couple of freckles and his arms are basically the same as his face, tan with one or two freckles. His hair is blonde and brown like a tree stump. His clothes are black some of them are as black as the night.

My New Zealand history

My New Zealand history

It wasn't until about 1300 that Aotearoa New Zealand was settled first by the ancestors of Maori. European settlers arrived in the 1800s. Different cultures  had to learn to live together in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Early Polynesian navigator Kupe’s wife first saw our land around 1300 and she called out ‘Te Ao Te Aotearoa.’’They wondered where migrating birds were every year so they followed them. The people were master builders of Waka or V’aka. They were double hulled, they had one sail and used a long paddle. They use the clouds to see land.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi was an agreement between the Maori and British. It was signed on the 6th of February 1840. The first chief to sign was Hone Heke, 500 chiefs signed but not all of the Maori chiefs did- because some people thought that it was not a good idea.William Hobson translated the treaty into Maori. The chiefs put a mark (tattoo) to show they had signed the treaty.

The early European Settlers came by a boat. It was not a good ride over here  because it took 6 weeks. They had not been on a boat before, they did not have toilets so when they were seasick they had to throw up in a bucket and then tip it over the side of the boat. When they got off the boat they had to carry all of their luggage and walk over the Bridle Path. Girls did not have fun back then because they had to do a lot of chores and the boys had to shoot rabbits and ride horses.

These are Important months in New Zealand Aotearoa history. They have helped to shape who we are today.

Te Papa

                                                                Te Papa

Something that I learnt from Te Papa is that Aotearoa means the land of the long white cloud.

The reason why it mean that is because a man, Kupe, and his wife were on a boat and she saw Aotearoa the land of the long white cloud.
